What the smell is telling you
A persistent musty smell is caused by moisture interacting with dust, timber and building materials, and by the gases mould and mildew release as they grow. If you can smell it but can’t see obvious mould, the moisture is usually hidden — held in damp wall plaster from rising damp, or rising up from a poorly ventilated space under the floor. Rising damp tends to bring the smell to walls and rooms on the ground floor, often alongside a tide mark or mould low on the walls. If the smell seems to come up through the floorboards, the source is more likely below — see a musty smell through the floorboards. Either way, masking it with sprays never lasts; the moisture source has to be addressed.
